Proud sponsors of TEDx PCL

You may have seen online that we recently sponsored a TEDx event in London. This was an exciting chance for Total Office to build on our corporate social values and support young people.

You’ve probably heard of TED talks…

TED is a non-profit organisation devoted to ‘ideas worth spreading’. Founded as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less, with many of these talks available online at TED.com.

So, what is TEDx?

TED created a series called TEDx, where x = an independently organised TED event. These are regional, self-organised events that bring people together for a shared learning experience.

Total Office sponsored an event called TEDxPCL. This event is founded and run by university students at Pearson Business School/Pearson College in London. A programme of 7 live speakers combined to spark deep discussion and connection among a group of 160 attendees.

Proud to support the talent of the future

We are proud to support young people in their education, by helping them to fund and experience an event of this kind. The audience (and the organising team) are tomorrow’s bright business sparks, part of a community gathered to hear inspirational, challenging thinking and to network with others.

At Total Office, this fits our values perfectly. The goals of our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Policy run through the heart of our business. This includes creating a positive community impact, collaborating with our colleagues, and always adopting a ‘Totally Possible’ mindset.

TEDxPCL – Leake Street Tunnels, London

The day offered a diverse mix of seven speakers discussing a broad range of topics, from mental health to virtual reality in the animation industry.

  • Jonathan Withey ‘Solving the Climate Crisis’
The climate crisis is prominent, but what should we do to address growing climate anxiety? Our friend from Planet Mark spoke about positive transformational change and the importance of encouraging conversations about climate with family, friends and colleagues.
  • Sophie Pender ‘How to Become Socially Mobile’
Sophie is the founder of the UK-based non-profit 93% club, which looks to support university students who had attended state school in finding employment. A lawyer by trade, and a member of the Forbes 30 under 30, Sophie’s personal journey of social mobility was not always easy. She delivered a candid and inspirational talk about the link between social mobility and alienation from your roots.
  • Andrew Schlussel ‘What Else are You Going to Do?’
With a CV including roles at Pixar, DreamWorks and Netflix Animation, Andrew is well used to changing technology. But with new machine learning and AI capabilities, how can you prepare for a world that is changing so rapidly?
  • Bayo Igoh ‘You Don’t Pick Your Role Models…They Pick You’
A personal story from Bayo sharing how he was quite literally home alone – when, at age 10, his family moved back home to Nigeria. A tale of community and the influence our role models have on us and whether we always choose them.
  • Dr Trevor Gerhardt ‘When Life Gives You Too Many Lemons’
Trevor shared a story of how three major challenges affected his life and mental health. So, what do you do when this happens? He came to realise that living through experiences forces you to question your own values.
  • Jo Bird ‘2 Magic Words That Will Transform Your Creativity’
Ex-Senior Creative at Gymshark, Jo talked about the importance placed on logic and common sense, when often what is needed is creative thinking. Creativity can’t be measured, but why are we not encouraging it? What do we need to do to think creatively?
  • Richard Edge ‘The Truth About Career Progression’
Career progression is challenging and not always linear, but there are some things we can do to help us stand out from the crowd. Richard shared insights and real-life stories gleaned from his network and experience in career coaching.

As you can see the range of topics and discussion was varied!

Total Office is proud to champion a ‘Totally Possible’ attitude and apply this to all aspects of our business. Our aim is to ensure that all our employees are treated with the kindness and respect they deserve and are supported by the organisation to grow and develop within their roles.

By supporting TEDxPCL, we hope that we can extend this support further into this community of young minds. Thank you to the team who organised the day – you did us proud.

Together, let’s be inspired.
