Improve Workplace Health with Walking Treadmills

Installing a shared treadmill desk is a simple and cost-effective way to give your staff the opportunity to improve their health whilst working.

Office workers have never been more sedentary and whilst treadmill desk users generally walk quite slowly (max 2 mph), replacing time spent sitting with a gentle stroll whilst working provides numerous health and productivity benefits.

So, what are walking treadmills?

Walking treadmills, or walking pads as they’re also known, are designed specifically for walking and are different from traditional treadmills.

Firstly, there are no handles on a walking pad treadmill, and the controls are generally separated so they can be controlled remotely from a desktop.

To use a treadmill for working you will need to put it under a height-adjustable desk; this will allow you to raise the desktop surface to the correct height whilst walking or standing. Most businesses choose to install a small bank of desks that are shared for ad hoc walking and working.

However, if you’re installing a treadmill in an employee’s personal office space, it’s possible to fit a chair alongside the treadmill for greater flexibility – if you have a wide enough desk (1.6m). This enables staff to walk, stand and sit all at the same desk.

Improving workplace well-being

“Research from the British Heart Foundation shows Brits spend
around 67 hours a week sitting down.”

An active workplace can help businesses to improve culture, demonstrate good corporate social value and incentivise people to return to the office. Installing treadmill desks into the workplace brings numerous health benefits.

Despite being a great way to improve the health of office workers, the concept of walking on a treadmill whilst working is still relatively unknown. We offer helpful advice about choosing the right setup for your business and available space.

So, whether you plan on installing one or a bank of treadmill desks, we can help you launch a successful and lasting workplace well-being initiative.

Successfully launch your initiative

We’ve developed User Guides and a rigorous Health and Safety Risk Assessment to help ensure your treadmills become a safe and regular part of your office life. In fact, we’ve worked with a wide range of companies to help them overcome the most common misconceptions. It’s easy to work and type whilst walking and there is never running involved!

Walking treadmills provide an opportunity for staff to achieve the perfect posture whilst walking and standing. However, you will need to ensure that monitors are presented at the correct height, and we prefer users not to be looking down at laptop screens. We have developed monitor arms with extended height and flexibility to move left and right so users always achieve the best posture whether walking, sitting, or standing.

“According to the NHS, many adults in the UK spend
around 9 hours a day sitting
.”

Walking helps employees easily increase their daily step count, feel more motivated, and counter the after-lunch slump. Some people find walking for an hour fits well with being on calls or checking and managing email.

Treadmill desks are the perfect solution.
