Kealy & Mily are Walking the 100km Thames Path Ultra Challenge

Our very own Kealy Green and Mily McKenzie have signed up to walk 100k in the Thames Path Ultra Challenge 2024. The event on 14th September supports the charity MIND.

Kealy and Mily could have opted for 75k, 50k, 25k or even a 10k route – but they wanted a challenge. And 100k is certainly a challenge when you consider that according to the NHS, the average Brit walks between 3,000 and 4,000 steps a day.

The 100k route heads from Putney Bridge, past Hampton Court to Runnymede. Participants can walk, jog or run, and will see lots of historic scenery before finishing in Henley.

Here we catch up with Kealy to see how they’re getting on.

Mily & Kealy

Why did you decide to take part in the challenge?

Mily and I have worked together for just over a year and as we chatted over lunch one afternoon, we spoke about how we would like to set ourselves a personal challenge, mentally and physically. A few weeks later we found ourselves registering with Thames Path Ultra Challenge!

The whopping 100km walk takes place over 2 days… after registering we found that this particular challenge is called the ‘Foot Shredder!’ (gulp!).

What training and preparation are you doing?

Depending on the time we have will depend on what training sessions we choose.  We manage training twice a week, whether it’s a spin class, a long-distance walk or a fast-paced gradient walk.

What are you enjoying about the training so far?

Honestly, it’s pushing ourselves to complete another 1km each time, the achievement we feel afterwards is uplifting.

What are you finding hard about the training?

Fitting it in our busy lifestyles.  We are both extremely supportive and while we cannot train in person a lot, we send each other motivational messages and what training we have completed.

Why did you choose to support MIND?

While we could have done this challenge quietly, we both said we would love to raise money for a charity that’s close to our hearts. We are sure each one of you can relate to mental health challenges at some stage in your lives; whether you were/are the sufferer or whether you’ve supported someone close to you who has suffered from this illness. We have all been affected.

How much money will you raise if you stay on target?

Our fundraising target is £1,150. So far, we are incredibly grateful to have raised 90% of this, with a total of £1,045. The pressure is on, not only to get to the finish line but to reach the target.

We will sadly lose our place if we do not reach the target by Saturday 24th August. We need your help to raise as much money as we can for a charity that supports those who are most vulnerable.

How will you celebrate if you complete the challenge?

To say we are nervous is an understatement, but we are looking forward to the challenge. I’m sure we will give each other a huge hug, celebrate with our friends and family who will be at the finish line, then head home and sleep …

What support has Total Office given you?

We have walking treadmills in the office, so we can use these if needed, plus many of our brilliant work colleagues have sponsored us.

Feeling inspired?

If you’re feeling inspired to take up the challenge, you can still register at Thames Path Ultra Challenge. Don’t forget, you can always sign up for a shorter route if 100k is too much!
